MAMAS AND PAPAS
The name "Mamas and Papas" probably does not exactly conjure up images of spicy and tasty food from a variety of different cuisines, but that is exactly what you find when you go there. Mamas and Papas calls itself a "latinic diner," whatever that means, but its Yotsuya location makes it easy to go there and check it out for yourself.
The food is taken from a variety of Spanish-speaking locations (hence the weird name, I suppose) This place is on my list because the food is excellent. The menu provides a lot of variety and the taste is very authentic. For example, the jalepeno salsa is actually spicy as opposed to the pepper-colored pickles you get at a lot of Tokyo restaurants which only serve to piss me off. At Mamas and Papas, if the menu says spicy, you can at least expect to sweat a bit.
Mamas and Papas has a nice feel to it. It is a small place, but they keep the lights down and candles everywhere. There is a rockin' stereo system blasting out Spanish tunes which adds nicely to the interior.
This place is great for a date or a small gathering, but it may be a bit small for a real party. There are about 5 or 6 tables and a long counter. Go early if you have a big group or call ahead and make some arrangements.
The food is good, but I wouldn't say the portions are exactly generous. For 2 people, you will probably need 4 to 5 items from the menu, each of which averages 700 to 900 yen. With drinks, expect to spend around 5000 or so for a nice evening. If you want to move up a notch and go for a really special experience for a big date, check out Fonda de la Madrugada.
Mamas and Papas also has nice drink selection, with lots of Mexican beers and a great cocktail menu. Raydude's recommendations for the first time are:
Peruvian Spicy Potato Salad (this rocks!)
Black Bean Dip (served boiling) with chips
Mexican Fried Rice
Spanish Omelet
Crushed Jalapeno Salsa
Mamas and Papas is located in Yotsuya, right beside of Nichibei Kaiwa Gakuin. From Yotsuya station, go up Sanei dori just about 3 minutes and it is on the right.
They are open every day from 5:30 until 1:00 except Sunday and national holidays. For more info or reservations (which you don't need unless you have a huge group) call 3226-4730.
